A fully hand-made twelve foot Red Cedar canoe with fiberglass reinforcement and waterproof bow/stern port holes.
The design for this canoe was based on plans found in Featherweight Boatbuilding by Mac McCarthy. This book was crucial to the success of this project. The specific design I followed was for the 'Wee Lassie' canoe: A 12 ft. cedar strip canoe with fiberglass coating the inside and out.
The overall structure of the canoe was made from Red Cedar cut into 12' x 0.25" x 1" strips. These strips were then glued together over forms that I had previously cut out. The upper rails of the canoe were cut from cherry wood, and then glued into place. There were no nails or screws used in the construction of the canoe body.
